A recharge range is listed for each binding style and service to assure that each department’s shipment is recharged based on the cost of production for those books. Rarely do identical volumes come to the library bindery for binding. Each book must be evaluated to determine how the volume should be processed to produce a readable and durable bound volume. As a result, the cost to produce any single volume within a shipment can vary depending on the manufacturing processes required. Average recharges to the department will fall within the stated range. Shipments of volumes that require less extensive processes will fall into the lower end of the range, more extensive or complex processes will fall into the higher end. Several factors will affect the price of volumes within the range including, but not limited to: the size of the volume, thickness of the volume, level of preparation required, method of leaf attachment, covers requiring special treatment and the amount of cover lettering requested, total number of volumes in the shipment.
All volumes for library binding must go through a preparation process prior to beginning the binding process. The level of preparation required depends on a number of factors including, but not limited to: condition of paper, condition of original binding, binding structure of the material, whether the material contains maps and/refolds, mounted photographs or foldouts, glossy or stiff covers which are to be bound in, advertisements or addendums that must be removed, contents or indexes that must be collated and moved, visual scanning for insufficient binding or trim margins, multiple issues of various size that must be bound together.
